Celebrating Lent: 2013

.
Lent 2013: Day 14

I had a horrible, scary thing happen to me when I was a very young priest. A set of my vestments which were designed and sewn by a friend were stolen from the Church sacristy. It was only these vestments, other sacred objects were “lifted” as well. I was disappointed. Those sacred vestments were dear to me. What troubled me even more is that the police indicated to us that the items were probably taken for use by (what were called in those days) Satan Worshippers for their “Black Mass”. I was distraught. This is a sacrilege. To think that these blessed and, in some cases, consecrated items were to be used in such a “devilish” way – beyond my comprehension.

What does God expect from me in my expression of love for Him? That I celebrate the Eucharist His Son left to us as a memorial, with great care, love, beauty, attention, and devotion. I am never perfect at doing this but I am conscious of His expectation.

??? What can I do to perfect my worship of God ???

Lent 2013: Day 13

I remember my first very best friend. He was great; we were good company for each other, happy, playful. We rode our bicycles all over the city, discovered new places, explored them. Sometimes, we would even go out at night, ride our bikes to the front gate of St. Michael’s Cemetery and wait til the “Green Ghost” appeared. And it would! omg!

We spoke things to each other I have never spoken to another person. Honest, straightforward, trustworthy.

I try to be that very same way with my Creator, my Father in Heaven. Really - what good does it do to lie to Him, to beat-around-the-bush, to hide things? I can’t always explain myself to Him because I’m not always certain why I do some of the things I do. But He knows.

Everyday I am hoping to nourish my friendship with God. So I tell Him everything. My first very “bestest” friend is now deceased, God will never die. Am I fortunate or what?!

??? What am I going to do today to bring us closer together ???

Lent 2013: Day 12

The years I lived and studied in the seminary were terrific years. I made friendships which are still alive and flourishing to this day. Just a few months ago some of us celebrated 40 years in the Priesthood and when we came together for Eucharist and personal time – all the years we were separated by assignments, etc. simply disappeared. Our friendship had withstood so many years of absence and neglect.

I must admit that in the great span of my life so far there have also been times of separation and neglect in my relationship with my Heavenly Father. I have always attempted resolution to those fragile times and I rejoice that they were not long lived.

??? How can i renew my relationship with God on a more regular basis ???

Celebrating Lent: 2013

Lent 2013: Day 11

First of all I would like to thanks the Academy. I would also like to thank the producers and directors for their confidence and trust. I would also like to thank my fellow actors for making me look so good. And lastly, I would like to thank all of you for coming and now I can say for sure, quoting a colleague of ours of some time back: now I know you like me, you really like me.

Yes I can understand why people watch the Academy Awards. All those movie stars, the dresses, the tuxes, the hair styles, the make-up. And yes, all those extra body parts so visible.

There are those, however, who see the Academy Awards as nothing more than an orgy in self-indulgence. Display of wealth? Opulence? No way! And even the losers go home with a “doggie-bag- worth at least $43,000.00

Can you even imagine one of these award winners standing at the microphone and saying:

We have sinned, been wicked and done evil;
we have rebelled and departed from your Commandments.
We have not obeyed your servants … (from today’s 1st Scripture reading).

They need to have their idol and they do. His name is Oscar.
We need to have our idols and we do as well.

As Jesus reminds us in our Gospel passage:

The measure with which you measure
will in return be measured back to you.

??? Do I participate in the opulence, the wealth of the world’s greedy – on any level at all ???

Lent 2013: Day 10

Do you remember when the Carnival cruise ship, Triumph, was afloat in the Gulf of Mexico, very near the mouth of Mobile Bay? Paralyzed for days. I felt for the thousands of passengers and crew on board that ship. What was to be an experience never to forget has become just that - but for the wrong reason. Whether you’re on one of the largest of cruise ships or on board an airplane - you have to adjust to turning your life over to the maneuverings of others or objects or unexpected situations That’s not always a simple step to make. When you’re no longer in control – that can be a most uneasy and uncomfortable feeling.

I would think that turning one’s life over to Christ could be problematic to people as well. Some people, anyway. Allowing Christ to give me direction for my life, instruction on how I should live my life with others, altering the purpose of my life – could I do that?

??? Am I uneasy yielding my life – even to Christ ???

Lent 2013: Day 9

I’ve got all kinda of pictures of my nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews as well. You should see my refrigerator door and my kitchen wall. Pictures everywhere.
They mean so much to me.

Their smiles cause me to hope that God smiles on me and my work as well. I know I can always do better and be better. I know that. I’m slow, ok.

Wouldn’t it be cool if God had a pic of me on His refrigerator door? You think He does? Your picture on His fridge door as well?

??? Is there something I need to know, Lord, that I just don’t know ???

Lent 2013: Day 8

For the last two weeks I have been spending extra time in my kitchen mixing batter for all the Mississippi Mud I am baking for our Church Friday Lenten Lunches. It’s not really involved and I could probably do it my sleep now. And I wish I could, truthfully.

It’s not a hardship. I mean, I’m doing this for a good cause. (Plus a few sweet treats myself – and NO- I didn’t give up sweets for Lent – that’s another story for later.)

When I stand at the kitchen counter mixing this and that I often turn my thoughts to the reason I do the things that I do, like mixing this batter, pouring it into pans, placing it into the oven, and waiting! Waiting!

I’m doing it for Him. After all, I am very well aware of what He has done for me. Thank you so much, Jesus.

??? Is there something else I should be doing for Him as well ???

Celebrating Lent 2013:

Lent 2013: Day 7

I placed my folding chair in the trunk of my car, drove to Wayside Park where my family had gone many, many times when we were kids. I set up my chair and let my body relax in its canvas seat. It was great just relaxing there, taking in nothing, taking in everything, remembering all those times so many years in the past.

I’m guessing all those times with my family at that former beach really impacted me. I still find much solace and peace sitting by the water and just meditating, wondering, thinking.

Why God? I have to ask Him “why?” because I really don’t know many of the answers. But He does. I can’t wait to talk to Him about, everything. Oh, blessed day.

??? God - You and Your expectations for me are right in front of me; help me to open my inner eyes and see what You see in me. OK ???

The ultimate goal of the universe is to show the glory of God.

Lent 2013: Day 6

I really enjoyed my trip to New York in October. And my cruise with so many friends and family in December. Just that – well, neither was long enough. Just a few more day, please. But it wasn’t meant to be.

I love this world God has created, I love it deeply. It’s just that, well, it’s not meant to be – forever. This isn’t my true home. That home awaits me whenever He calls me.

That’s gonna be quite a trip, don’t you think. And, wow, it’s never gonna end.

??? If my final home is yet to be, should I change anything about they way I am living right now so that I can board the plane to my final vacation ???

Lent 2013: Day 5 (remember, Sunday is not counted as a day of Lent)

It’s taken me a long, long time but I have finally dropped 35 lbs and have rock solid abs. I am gonna look awesome in this year’s Dogwood Dash! I am so proud of myself.

That’s how God sees me of course. Perfect specimen of His creation. Ain’t no way I have lost 35 lbs and I certainly don’t have a washboard abdomen. Of course not. lol

I know my inadequacies and they do get in my way. I’m working on them though, really I am.

??? Is God testing me, am I properly using the gifts God has given me so that I can fulfill my purpose in life ???

The Shocking Truth About Catholic Priests:

.

by Sister Catherine Wybourne, Digitalnun on February 18, 2013

According to the 2012 edition of the Anuario Pontificio, at the end of 2010 there were 412,236 Catholic priests in the world. Of those four hundred thousand odd, some were indeed the paedophiles and fornicators of popular imagination. I daresay some were also gamblers, drunkards, or what have you. A few may even have been hypocrites or heretics, either unbelievers themselves or teaching a doctrine inconsistent with what the Catholic Church believes and teaches (it is not difficult to find out what the Catholic Church believes and teaches, it is all in the Catechism, which you can find online at the Vatican website.) HOWEVER, I dare to assert that the majority of those 412,236 were chaste, good-living, decent men, who believed what they taught and did their best to serve the people of God in every way they could. That is the shocking truth about Catholic priests, a truth many find hard to digest because it challenges their own values and preoccupations.

Why am I in such combative mood this morning? It is because I am increasingly concerned, not just about media drivel on the subject of the pope’s retirement from office, but also about the peddling of false rumours and derogatory statements about the Catholic Church in general and its priests in particular — sometimes, I am sad to say, by other Catholics or members of other Christian denominations.

To those outside, the Church as an organization is baffling to the point of incomprehension. It is not merely international but supranational — which is not to say that it is free from national characteristics or shortcomings. The Church is not a democracy in the way that most people understand democracy, yet it is one of the most ‘democratic’ of all institutions. Every Catholic has the right of direct recourse to Rome. There are no intermediaries that have to be gone through. The Church has strict rules, but our sex-obsessed culture homes in on only one subject whilst ignoring the tough and demanding nature of the Church’s teaching on capitalism, the death penalty and so on. In short, the Church is simultaneously both a complex organization and a very simple one, not to be explained — or dismissed — in a line or two.

There are many things in the Church that are less than ideal, many urgent matters that need to be addressed, but the recent spate of pope-bashing and priest-bashing has highlighted something we often forget. People don’t attack something they see as irrelevant. All the vitriol, all the misrepresentations, are a mark of just how relevant the Church is and, by extension, what a good job its priests are doing. There is, however, a danger in the sheer volume of personal nastiness we are seeing in the media and elsewhere. I am not an uncritical admirer of Pope Benedict XVI, but I have been appalled by the personal attacks on him during the past week especially. I have also been appalled by the treatment meted out to some of my priest friends, not because they are guilty of any crime but because some people think it acceptable to attack them simply because they are priests. Priests are human; morale can slip. We need to pray for our priests as never before — and think carefully
about how we ourselves encourage, support or undermine them.

Lent 2013: Day 4

Just the other week I went through my entire library of books, thousands probably. I paged through most of them. Found all kinds of notes, messages, unpaid bills, pictures, holy cards. You name it. I tossed almost all of it.

Not everything is meant to be kept, you know. In this life nothing, and I mean nothing, is meant to be permanent. Things get tossed. People die: even our loved ones.

But God made us folks to live forever in eternity. Ain’t that cool!

??? So, ok, what should I start doing and what should I stop doing to be worthy of eternal life with God and all those I love (and the people I haven’t met yet ???

Can you believe the cost of gas today?  It’s just February and the price has gone up so steeply since Christmas.  I’m sometimes on the edge when I pull out my credit card to make another purchase of fuel.  Ugh.  So dang expensive!

Lent 2013: Day 2

My sister enjoys searching for odd, old, used pieces of whatever, you know, junk, which she can later re-use in her art. My goodness, the things which she has found. Unbelievable. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, huh.

Sometimes I feel useless. Ready to be thrown out. Oh, but I can’t remain with this thought too long because I know God doesn’t make junk and God made me.

I love You God.

Pope Benedict XVI to Resign at the End of the Month

Pope Benedict XVI will resign from his papal office, effective February 28 at 8:00 PM local time.

The text of his announcement:

"Dear Brothers, I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

"I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.

"For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

"Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer."

Monday Feb.11: The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes:

.

.
Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

O ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of mercy,
health of the sick, refuge of sinners,
comforter of the afflicted,
you know my wants, my troubles,
my sufferings; look with mercy on me.
.
By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes,
you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary,
from which you dispensed your favors;
and already many sufferers have
obtained the cure of their infirmities,
both spiritual and corporal.
.
I come, therefore, with complete confidence
to implore your maternal intercession.
Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of my requests.
Through gratitude for your favors,
I will endeavor to imitate your virtues,
that I may one day share your glory.
Amen.

Priests in German Song Competition:

.

.
On Saint Valentine's Day they will battle it out with other acts to represent Germany at the 2013 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Though it seems an unlikely place for a group of priests, the German trio is no stranger to the spotlight. They've already released a Top 10 album in 2011 featuring classic Catholic hymns. But this song could take them to new heights.

For the competition, Father Vianey Meister, diocesan priest Andreas Schatzkle and Abbot Rhabanus Petri have teamed up with German soprano Mojca Erdmann. Together they will perform Ave Maris Stella, a Gregorian song about the Virgin Mary, dating back to the Middle Ages.
