The 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

When there's a sudden power failure and we are plunged ibnto darkness, it's hard to find the candles or the batteries. The refrigeratior stops. There's no TV or radio. The electric clocks, thermostats and appliances are dead. Too often, we are caught unprepared. Planning for disasters is always on the to-do list -- usually near the bottom.

As Mark Twain said:
"Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow."

But Ben Franklin warned:
"you may delay, but time will not."

In our Gospel for this Sunday Jesus speaks to us about the need to be prepared for His sudden return.

How might we prepare ourselves?

Here's a few ideas:

+ rendering humble service to others

+ combating poverty

+ ending the hatred that divides

+ establishing peace among individuals

+ curbing the pride that causes us to be confrontational

+ building social structures that respect the dignity of people

+ seeing Christ in the least of our brothers and sisters

in other words:

+ serving Jesus Christ in whatever form He takes!
