T'was the Night Before Christmas
The Pope Speaks

During his weely Wednesday audience last Wednesday, Pope Benedict XVI said: "perhaps the world crisis that is affecting so many families and all of humanity could be the stimulus for rediscovering the warmth, simplicity, amity, and solidarity which are the very values of Christmas. Stripped of its materialistic and consumer trappings, Christmas offers a chance to welcome as a personal gift the message of hope that eminates from the mystery of Christ's birth. Even a nonbeliever can perceive something special, transcendent and intimate that speaks to the heart."

Gaudete Sunday: The Third Sunday of Advent

Gaudete Sunday is the third Sunday of Advent in the liturgical calendar of the Western church.
The Latin “Gaudete” is translated as Rejoice, the first word of the of this day's Mass: "Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, rejoice; let your forbearance be known to all, for the Lord is near at hand; have no anxiety about anything, but in all things, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be known to God."
On Gaudete Sunday rose colored vestments may be worn instead of violet, which is prescribed for every day in the season of Advent. In churches which have an Advent wreath, the rose colored candle is lit in addition to two of the violet colored candles, which represent the first two Sundays of Advent. During the otherwise somewhat-penitential season of Advent, the readings on the third Sunday emphasize the joyous anticipation of the Lord's coming.

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

May you, who are present in these Vatican Gardens, hold sway in the hearts of all the mothers of the world and in our own heart. With great hope, we turn to you and trust in you.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pray for us.
His Holiness Benedict XVI
